The Nanjing subway is one of the youngest in the world and might become the most rapidly expanding if the same pace of construction continues. The first line opened in 1995 as a north-south axis from the Central Station to the southern suburbs, a first section of the second line followed only four years later. One operates between Xin Zhuang in Southwest Nanjing and the Nanjing Railway Station, the other one operates between the Hong Qiao Airport and the Pudong New Area.

    A third line, the so-called Pearl Line, has been developed out of a former ring railway, mainly elevated, to run from Baoshan Steel Complex in the north via Nanjing Railway Station to Caoxi Rd. in the south (36 km, 21 stations).

    The economic boom in Nanjing, which has a population of 16 million, had unleashed such a surge in traffic by the end of the 1980s that the transportation system was facing meltdown.

    The city's authorities, who were increasing happy to seek advice from Western Europe and North America, decided in favour of a 40-year phased programme that would include 11 metro lines covering over 325km.
    Although still in its relatively early stages with only three routes clearly mapped out, Metro has cut cross-city travel times in some cases from over an hour to a few minutes. A million journeys a day are expected by 2005.

  
Six Steps of Taking Metro  
1.Buy Ticket (Or use Nanjing Public Traffic Card – you could get the card at HuaXia Bank 华夏银行)
    Use the automatic sale machine (TVM):
    Select the destination on the map of the touchable screen,
    Select the quantity of tickets,
    Insert relevant coins or banknote to TVM according to the display show you (you could change your big par banknote into coins at the service station),
    Take the tickets
2.Exam tickets
    choose the tickets examiner with green arrow and use your electrical tickets or your Nanjing Public Traffic Card
3.Waiting the metro
    stay behind the yellow line / do not jump to the rail / never touch the metro door when the door open and close
4.Getting on metro
    be careful for the interspaces between metro and platform
5.Get off metro
6.Exam ticket
    select tickets examiner with green arrow and show your tickets or cards again
