Shanghai Transportation Guide - Metro

The Shanghai subway is one of the youngest in the world and might become the most rapidly expanding if the same pace of construction continues. The current operational metro network is composed of a north-south axis from the Central Station to the southern suburbs (Line 1); a east-west line that links Pudong and Puxi areas (Line 2) and the third line, the so-called Pearl Line, runs from Baoshan Steel Complex in the north via Shanghai Railway Station to Caoxi Rd. in the south.

The future construction of Shanghai Urban Metro includes the construction of Line 4,5,6,7 and 8, which will form a comprehensive and convenient underground transportation network. Currently, the line 4 and 5 are under-construction.

Shanghai Transportation Guide - Bus & Tour Bus

Local Buses
Shanghai buses run everywhere, but they are unbelievably crowded, especially during the early morning and late evening rush hours; they are extremely slow owing to the grotesque traffic congestion in the city; and few lines run the long distances needed to travel from one side of the city to the other. They operate from around 4am to 10.30pm , although each line has its own schedule. Fares are generally ¥1 for regular buses and ¥2 for air-conditioned ones; buy your ticket from the conductor on the bus. Carrying exact change will eliminate a lot of hassle. You can dial 160-881-60 for checking the bus route information (the service is in Chinese only and charges ¥1/min.).

Tour Bus
There are several tour bus lines that take you traveling around the city. There are also buses that go to trips in other destinations like Suzhou , Hangzhou , etc. There are various options from 1 day to 3 night tours with or without tour guides.

Shanghai Transportation Guide - Car Rental

For anyone adventurous enough to brave China 's anything-goes driving culture, Shanghai has taken its first steps into the car rental market. In addition to local car rental companies, several international car rental service providers are operating in Shanghai . You can seek services from hotels, Airport or companies' offices.

Most of car rental companies will help you to fix up with a temporary license (a translation of your foreign license) and rent you a car. Bear in mind, however, that Shanghai 's traffic is slow-moving at the best of times, and you may not be allowed to drive your car beyond the city limits.

Shanghai Transportation Guide - Taxi

Taxi are very easy to get hold of and they are often the most comfortable way to getaround - fares usually come to between ¥20 and ¥40 for rides within the city. Few drivers speak English, so it will help to have your destination written in Chinese. JRE provides a convenient bilingual Taxi Book for its clients, and it is free). Starting fares between 11pm and 5am start at RMB 13 higher than at other times (starts at RMB10). If you want to complain about the service quality, call the Shanghai Taxi Management at 6323-3215. Don't forget to take the taxi driver's registration number always visible in front of the passenger seat.

Shanghai Transportation Guide - World's First Commercial

Magnetic-Levitation Train
The world's first commercial "maglev" train ?reaching a peak speed of 270 mph ?transports passengers along a 20-mile track between downtown Shanghai and the city's ultra-modern Pudong International Airport in just over 10 minutes. This new bullet train is perfectly safe because it has no wheels and never touches the track, so it can't derail. It rides above its track suspended by powerful opposing magnets.

The "maglev" train links metro line 2 with Pudong International Airport . The fare is RMB 50 for single way and RMB 80 for a return ticket and tickets are available at any metro stations.
